Here's how we explain it to our local customers: this might be the log set for you if your primary goal is heat. Vent free gas logs are considered a supplemental heating source. The flames come through the jets on the burner and the logs are strategically placed around the flames, allowing the flames to come up in between the logs or in the front and the rear or the logs, without really touching the logs. This is what gives you the ability to close the damper and keep the heat in the room. While the flames are gorgeous, they will be smaller than the flames on a vented set.
