One of the most important decisions you'll make when choosing a gas log set is how you want to ignite it. It's not just about convenience—it's about safety, control, and choosing a system that works with your space, whether you're indoors, outdoors, vented, or vent-free.
Here's a simple breakdown of the ignition types we offer—and why we've left a few off the list.
Which Ignition System Is Right for Me?
Most customers don't want to study ignition systems — they want to know what to buy. Here's a quick guide:
| If You Want... | Consider... |
|---|---|
| The lowest-cost option | Manual Safety Pilot |
| A handheld remote | Remote Control Ignition |
| Adjustable flame height | Variable Flame Remote |
| Lower pilot gas consumption | Electronic / Intermittent Pilot |
| Automatic temperature control | Thermostat Remote |

♨️ Manual Safety Pilot (Standing Pilot)
This system includes a standing pilot—a small flame that stays lit at all times (just like older water heaters). You light the pilot once, then control the flame with a knob located inside the fireplace.
- ✅ No electricity required
- ✅ Reliable year-round operation
- ✅ Best for homeowners who don't mind manually operating their fireplace
🖲️ Remote Control Ignition
Remote control systems include a remote pilot valve, allowing you to operate your gas log set with a handheld remote. Two popular types are:
🔘 On/Off Remote
Works like a light switch—press one button to light the fire, another to shut it off.
🔆 Variable Flame Remote
Lets you raise or lower the flame height to suit your mood or heat needs.
- ✅ Adds convenience
- ✅ No need to reach into the firebox
- ✅ Available for vented and vent-free logs
- ✅ Works with indoor and outdoor setups
⚡ Electronic / Intermittent Pilot Ignition
This system only lights the pilot when you're ready to use the log set. The pilot turns off automatically when the burner shuts off, helping save energy.
- ✅ Pilot only lights when needed
- ✅ Battery-powered or hardwired options
- ✅ Excellent for outdoor use where wind may affect a standing pilot
🌡️ Thermostat Remote (Vent-Free Only)
For vent-free gas logs, a thermostat remote allows you to set a target temperature. The burner will cycle on and off to maintain that temperature—similar to a central heating system.
- ✅ Maintains consistent room temp
- ✅ Ideal for supplemental heat
- ✅ Works only with compatible vent-free log sets
🔌 Will My Gas Logs Work During a Power Outage?
It depends on your ignition system. Here's a quick breakdown:
- ✅ Manual Safety Pilot → Yes
- ✅ Millivolt Remote → Yes
- ⚠️ Battery-Powered Electronic Ignition → Usually Yes
- ❌ Hardwired Electronic Ignition → No
If power outage reliability is important to you, a manual or millivolt system is your safest bet.
🧨 Why We Don't Sell Match-Lit Burners
Match-lit burners offer no safety shutoff. Once the gas is turned on, it flows freely—whether the unit has been lit or not. If someone accidentally leaves it on or the flame goes out, gas can continue to flow.
That's not a risk we're willing to pass along to our customers—especially when better, safer systems are available.
Every gas log system we offer includes a built-in safety pilot, which means gas can only flow when you're actively engaging the system. Whether that's using a match or pressing an ignitor button, the safety pilot ensures the gas won't flow on its own.
Still Not Sure Which Ignition System to Choose?
Most homeowners choose:
✅ Manual Safety Pilot for simplicity
✅ Remote Control Ignition for convenience
✅ Electronic Ignition for energy savings
✅ Thermostat Remote for supplemental heat
