Tip: Check local codes—some areas restrict vent-free appliances.
Where to Install
• Masonry fireplaces (natural brick)
• Prefabricated fireboxes
• Approved vent-free fireboxes
Always follow your owner’s manual for safe installation.
Where Not to Install
• Direct vent fireplaces or inserts
• Fireplaces not specifically approved for vent-free use
• Burners not designed for vent-free logs
• Areas where local codes prohibit vent-free appliances
Check your local building codes and refer to your owner's manual to confirm safe placement.
Log & Burner Fit
For the best results, use the burner designed specifically for your vent-free log set. Matching the correct components ensures safe, efficient operation. Outdoor installations must use an approved stainless steel burner.
Regular Maintenance = Long-Lasting Logs
Vent-free gas logs are low-maintenance by design—but indoor use still calls for occasional upkeep to keep things clean and operating safely. Before your first seasonal burn, take a few minutes to review your owner’s manual for model-specific guidance.
Pre-Season / Before Use
- Clear away dust, pet hair, or debris from the burner and surrounding area.
- Test your remote, wall switch, or manual ignitor before the first burn.
- Confirm that your pilot light lights and holds properly.
- Check the logs for any shifting—vent-free logs must remain in their exact factory placement.
- Look out for unusual flame behavior (like lifting, yellowing, or odor).
During the Heating Season
- Light the pilot as needed and observe flame pattern regularly.
- Avoid moving or adjusting logs—misplacement can cause soot buildup or unsafe conditions.
- Keep an eye out for dust or cobweb buildup around the burner.
- A quick professional checkup once a year is a good idea—especially before heavy use.
Important
- Always leave glass doors fully open during operation to allow proper airflow.
- Refer to the manual to avoid voiding your warranty.
- When in doubt, call a professional instead of troubleshooting complex issues.

— American Gas Works
After extensive research, I landed on this product by Empire, but there were (and are) several problems that folks should be aware of:
1) First the big problem. The unit I received had a gas valve inverted, which they said was common (?!), so it wouldn't light. I assumed like all other products these days, that we would simply ship it back for a replacement, but Empire forces you to troubleshoot; they won't take it back. They ended up shipping a new part that had to be installed after disassembling the unit. If you have an installer like I did, they are forced to go through a ton of back and forth with the company, racking up the hours. That's bad enough, but the insult to injury is that Empire has a fixed price of $150/hr for service professionals, so they wouldn't pay our plumber his normal rate, and I had to cover the difference. My install ended up ~$700, dramatically increasing the cost of the purchase.
2) Now for the annoyances. I got the remote, which is an extra ~$750. It is rudimentary. You have to hold the high/low button down for up to 30 seconds to move between high and low settings. If you use the temp control, it always comes back on high. There's also no timer (e.g., run for, say, 8 hours and turn off)
3) They give you a tiny piece of rock wool. And I mean a super small amount that forces you to buy extra. If anyone has used a gas fireplace before, you litter the bottom with rock wool to simulate embers. The amount they provide gives you about five finger-pinch sizes for the front. It's kind of ridiculous. The smallest amount I could buy was a giant bag on Amazon for a whopping $9. They could have and should have provided more rock wool with the unit.
The unit now works, looks great, and pumps out a lot of heat. I just wish Empire hadn't been more focused on their profit margins than making the experience good for the customer. It will forever be a bittersweet enjoyment.
Thank you for sharing your experience — we truly appreciate you taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We’re very glad to hear that your system is now working well and delivering the heat and appearance you hoped for.
We also understand how frustrating the installation and troubleshooting process can feel when something isn’t quite right out of the box. Issues with individual components are uncommon, but when they do occur, we work closely with both our customers and the manufacturer to get everything resolved as quickly and smoothly as possible. Your feedback helps us continue to advocate for improvements in that area.
Regarding the remote features and ember material, we appreciate you noting what stood out to you. Every customer’s setup and expectations are a little different, and insights like yours help other shoppers better understand what to expect and help us guide customers to the right configuration for their needs.
Thank you again for your honesty. If you ever have questions or need support with your system in the future, we’re always here to help. We hope you enjoy many warm seasons ahead with your new log set.
Warm regards,
American Gas Works
